JESUS FULFILLED THE SIGN OF JONAH
Yesterday we left off with this scripture.
Study to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 New King James Version (NKJV)
Yesterday we looked at five key things that indicated that Jesus must have died at the same time as the Passover lamb, on Wednesday at 3:00 PM.
If not, then ...
1. Jesus failed to meet the ONE criteria, He Himself prophesied.
2. The Sadducees, Pharisees, and Scribes, clearly broke the law.
1. convening the Sanhedrin on a sabbath day
2. starting a public trial on a Sabbath day
3. They asked for the guard to be posted on the same morning Jesus was being tried and in the same court of law. (not possible he wasn't dead yet)
In order not to break the law of the Festival Sabbath, all these things had to happen during the 24 hour period known as the Day of Preparation, running from Tuesday at sundown to just before the sun went down on Wednesday.
After the sun went down it would be the Passover Sabbath, (Wednesday evening into Thursday evening) followed by a normal day and then the weekly sabbath (Friday evening into Saturday evening) Jesus rose from the dead after the two Sabbaths, the Passover Sabbath followed by the weekly sabbath. He rose on the on the first day of the week (Sunday before dawn) the day that the priests would have waved the barley sheaf indicating the first fruits of the over-comers.
Let me lay out for you the entire week of the events the way they MUST have happened.
Saturday (Nisan 10) DAY OF SELECTION (triumphal entry)
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, (Nisan 11-12-13)(examination of the lamb in the house)
Tuesday afternoon (Nisan 13) disciples slaughter and prepare the natural lamb for dinner, they sit down, after sundown. (Essene Sect Nisan 14 - lambless Passover)
Tuesday Evening at sundown (begins Nisan 14 according to the Sanhedrin) so they ate their Passover on the Day of Preparation (one day early) according to the Sanhedrin
Jesus sat down with his disciples and ate the Last Supper. He went through the entire Passover process. Telling them how much he desired to eat this natural Passover with them. This was all done 24 hours before the Sanhedrin sanctioned Passover and it was done without a lamb according to Essene traditions. (Jesus was well aware that within 21 hours He would be fulfilling this Feast by becoming THE FINAL PASSOVER LAMB and the festival would never be the same again.)
Tuesday evening after Supper (Nisan 14 the DAY OF PREPARATION) at the point of the third cup, the cup of Redemption in the Passover protocol,
• He instituted the Lord's Supper to commemorate his death.
• Judas left to set-up His betrayal.
• After dinner, they went to the Mount of Olives where Jesus prayed three times, while the disciples slept.
• Jesus was arrested and taken before the Sanhedrin.
Tuesday night (Nisan 14 the DAY OF PREPARATION) The facts recorded in Scripture indicate that they were in a hurry to get rid of Jesus before the festival started, in less than 20 hours. Because, you don't just get 70 lawyers and national leaders to convene in a courtroom, late at night. Not unless you have planned ahead of time. He was tried by the Sanhedrin, and the trial went on through the night, partially due I believe to getting all the parties physically assembled into the room to convene the trial. It takes a while for men to travel from their homes to the Temple in the dark.
Wednesday Morning (still Nisan 14 the DAY OF PREPARATION) they brought Jesus before Pilot
• Pilot referred Jesus' case to Herod.
• Herod returned Jesus to Pilot
• Pilot offers Jesus or Barabbas, they cry out, "Give us Barabbas"
• Pilot Frees Barabbas, "And what shall I do with this man Jesus?"
• "Crucify Him Crucify Him!"
• Pilot washes his hands of the bloodguiltiness,
• "Let His blood be upon us and our children" Isareal called down a curse on themselves and upon their children.
• Pilot has Jesus scourged and turned over to the Jews for crucifixion
Third hour - 9 AM - they led him to the place of the skull to be crucified.
9 AM-12 PM - For three hours he hung there in the blazing sun.
12 PM Darkness engulfed the land until - 3 pm (Nisan 14 the Day of Preparation)
3 PM - Jesus gave up His spirit as the lamb of God which takes away the sin of the world at the appointed time pre-empting the national (four footed) lamb to be slain for Passover.
o The veil in the temple was rent from top to bottom.
ending the old patterns, of the natural lamb
the natural temple
the natural priesthood and
launching the new covenant of the supernatural.
Historical records show that the scarlet thread tied on the doors of the temple on the Day of Atonement ceased to turn white 40 years prior to the fall of Jerusalem in 70 AD. A sign that God was no longer accepting the blood of the four footed to cover sin. It had been pre-empted by the blood of Jesus which speaks a better word.
Wednesday between 3 PM and before 6 PM - before sundown, before the festival Sabbath.
o Jesus side was pierced ("none of his bones shall be broken")
o Joseph seeks His body and places it in a tomb nearby,
Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good and just man. He had not consented to their decision and deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before. That day was the Preparation, and the (festival) Sabbath drew near. Luke 23:50-54
Wednesday at Sundown (Nisan 15 begins the festival SABBATH)
But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Matthew 12:39-40
Let's start the count of days and nights of the sign of Jonah prophesied beforehand by Jesus about Himself and His resurrection.
Remember if He fails to meet the requirements of this ONE sign, He is disqualified to be the Messiah and the coming King.
1. Night One - Wednesday night (Nisan 15 Passover Sabbath)
2. Day One - Thursday (Nisan 15 Passover Sabbath)
3. Night Two - Thursday night (Sabbath completed - Nisan 16)
4. Day Two - Friday (Nisan 16 - a normal day)
5. Night Three - Friday night (Nisan 17 - weekly sabbath)
6. Day Three - Saturday (Nisan 17 - weekly Sabbath)
7. First Fruits - starts at sundown Saturday
8. the first day of the week the morning after the weekly sabbath)
Jesus fulfilled this requirement and so much more.
Jesus in His life, ministry, death, and resurrection fulfilled 333 prophetic scriptures, some while he was still a babe, an infant, and a growing child!
More research has led me to modify my thoughts on this post, this was based on scholars who assert that Jesus died in 30 A.D.
Tomorrow - Why Jesus' resurrection had to happen on this particular day of the year! Jesus is the first-fruits!
