DID JESUS FULFILL THE SIGN OF JONAH?
THE SIGN OF JONAH
For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Matthew 12:39-40
If Jesus died on Good Friday at 3:00 PM as most churches practice:
- Then Jesus failed to meet the one criteria he stated would be the only sign of His validity as the Son of Man, the Messiah, the Christ!
On the first day you shall hold a solemn and holy assembly, ... no kind of work shall be done in them, save [preparation of] that which every person must eat—that only may be done by you. Exodus 12:16
When it was morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people held a consultation against Jesus to put Him to death; And they bound Him and led Him away and handed Him over to Pilate the governor. Matthew 27:1-2The Scripture passage above states that in the morning they delivered Him to Pilot, but it also says later in the same chapter that the morning after the day of preparation, they asked for a guard to be placed around his tomb... which was a Sabbath day.
The next day, that is, the day after the day of Preparation [for the Sabbath], the chief priests and the Pharisees assembled before Pilate And said, Sir, we have just remembered how that vagabond Impostor said while He was still alive, After three days I will rise again. Matthew 27:62-63 Amplified BibleAgain you might ask what's the big deal? why does it matter, which day He died?
Because Jesus pointed to this as THE ONLY sign to that generation that His claims to be the Son of God were valid. When we reach out to someone to introduce them to Christ through His word, and they run into this issue and ask questions. We should know if Jesus fulfilled the sign of Jonah or not.
It is important to know and perhaps to know why we can say that He did fulfill the sign of Jonah with confidence.
Study to show yourselves approved unto God, a workmen that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
2 Timothy 2:15I have since the writing of this post done more research myself and would like to forward you to that post as well. Evidence of A.D. 33
