WHAT DOES CROSSING THE JORDAN HAVE TO DO WITH PALM SUNDAY?
WHAT DOES CROSSING THE JORDAN HAVE TO DO WITH PALM SUNDAY?
In the book of Joshua chapter 3, we find a story that took place on Abib 10 the same day that Israel chose their Passover lamb.
Joshua (Yeshua) not Moses parted the waters = Salvation belongs to our God *
It details an event that was similar but not identical to the crossing of the Red Sea.
The RED Sea crossing happened right after the first Passover, whereas, this one happened just before Passover.
the RED Sea has been compared to water Baptism, whereas this one has been compared to the finished work of Jesus on the cross and in his burial and resurrection.
the RED Sea was by the hand of Moses outstretched, this one was by the hand of Yeshua (Joshua)
the RED Sea marked freedom from Slavery, this one marked Salvation unto eternal life.
v5 Joshua told the people to consecrate themselves (during the 13 days of Elijah)
v13 as soon as the priests who carry the Ark of the Lord - the Lord of all the earth - set foot in the Jordan, its waters will be cut off.
v15 now the Jordan (River of Death) was at flood stage all during harvest. (the barley harvest)
Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water's edge
Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water's edge
v16 the water from upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away, at a town called Adam in the vicinity of Zarethan. while the water flowing down to the salt sea was completely cut off.
Chapter 4 v19 on the tenth day of the first month, the people went up from the Jordan and camped at Gilgal
There are several elements of the work of Christ eluded to in this passage.
Joshua (Yeshua) not Moses parted the waters = Salvation belongs to our God *
They camped for three days - they came up out of the river of death after 3 days
The flow of the river of death (Jordan) was stopped and then reversed all the way back upstream to Adam = reversing the curse of Death coming from Adam, by Jesus' resurrection - first fruits of Yeshua' on the third day!
Death in Adam, Life in Christ
Therefore, just as through one man (Adam) sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned— (For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.) 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come. But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many. Romans 5:12-15
Once on the other side, of the Jordan (death) river, they went up to Gilgal on the tenth day of the first month. They were circumcised during the 13 'Days of Elijah' and healed for the three days prior to Passover. Gilgal = I have rolled away your reproach. This is a foreshadowing of Jesus as the Passover lamb which takes away (rolls away) the sin of the world.
Choosing Jesus as our Savior our Passover lamb. Is there another choice?
Choosing Jesus as our Lamb who takes away our sin and our High Priest whose feet touched 'death' and the flow of death was stopped. He stands there as we walk through death and walks us out the other side. Are there any other mediators to choose from?

This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” ACTS 4:11-12

* For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, 1 Timothy 2:3-5
