THE TWO (2) SABBATHS of PASSION WEEK
Last time we talked about...
This time we are talking about THE 2 SABBATHS OF PASSION WEEK
This is due to the ignorance in the church regarding the Feasts of the Lord. The Feasts of the Lord with their Sabbaths are laid out chronologically in Scripture for anyone who wishes to learn about them they can be found in Leviticus 23.
One rule I have mentioned before but it bears repeating here is the first mention of anything in the Bible makes it preeminent in the series that follows. In this passage, we see the first Feast of the Lord is the weekly Sabbath making it the most important one and it encompasses the purpose of all the others.
‘Six days shall work be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, a holy convocation. You shall do no work on it; it is the Sabbath of the Lord in all your dwellings Leviticus 23:3
We can discover two things here about the weekly Sabbath in this passage:
- 'a' Sabbath denotes it is not the only Sabbath
- Sabbath = Holy Convocation
This phrase (Holy Convocation) will be used several times to denote other 'Sabbaths' as we continue to read this passage of Scripture in the very next verse we find that Feasts of the Lord are Holy Convocations...
v4 ‘These are the Feasts of the Lord, holy convocations which you shall proclaim at their appointed times.
v5 On the fourteenth day of the first month at twilight is the Lord’s Passover.
v6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the Feast of Unleavened Bread to the Lord; seven days you must eat unleavened bread.
v7 On the first day you shall have a holy convocation; you shall do no customary work on it.
v8 But you shall offer an offering made by fire to the Lord for seven days. The seventh day shall be a holy convocation; you shall do no customary work on it.’ ”
It is plain from the text that we have moved from the weekly sabbath to the Holy Day 'Sabbaths' they are clearly articulated:
- Set aside as Holy convocations (plural)
- No customary work is to be done
In 30 A.D. these two sabbaths are two days apart with a common day falling in between on Friday. And we can see that Jesus shifts between the two calendars to fulfill all of the law and the prophets.
Tuesday - In the evening Jesus and the disciples eat the Passover according to the Essene sect. Jesus is tried by the Jews through the long night and the Gentiles in the early morning Wednesday.
Wednesday
9 AM - after three trials and being scourged he was led to the place of the skull and nailed to the cross.12 PM - the sun was obscured and it becomes dark (preventing anyone from prematurely killing their four footed lambs) before (Jesus) the Lamb of God which takes away the sin of the world became the Passover Lamb, forever replacing the four-footed type.3 pm - Jesus gave up his spirit at the appointed time for the Passover lamb to be slain.6 pm - before sunset Jesus was laid in the tomb (the belly of the earth) before the day changed to the 15th (A Sabbath - Holy Convocation)
Thursday - the 15th 'first' day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread and therefore, is a 'Sabbath', a Holy Convocation; no shops were open for business. No place to buy spices, no preparation of the spices could be done.
Friday (the day after the Sabbath) when the shops reopened - the women bought spices and went home to prepare them at sundown the weekly sabbath began and so the women had to wait again before going to the tomb with their spices.
Saturday
After sundown (began the first day of the week) Jesus rose from the dead. There is no time given in Scripture for his rising from the dead. Jesus has completed the prophetic sign of Jonah that He gave to this wicked generation. He had been in the belly of the earth for three days and for three nights.
By the way, it was believed in Hebrew culture that a person's soul only left their body after being dead for three days, so by Jesus staying in the grave for three days and three nights He validated His death and proved that His resurrection was a supernatural miracle of God.
However, if we go with the Roman Church's 'Good Friday' version, His resurrection is less impressive than the resurrection a few weeks earlier of his friend Lazurus who was raised after three days! And Jesus failed to fulfill the ONLY sign He gave for His claim as the Messiah!
Sunday
Scripture records that the women went to the tomb before the sun rose and that the angels said he had already risen. So Jesus clearly rose before dawn on Sunday, so Sunrise services also have no bearing in Scripture.
