Reversing the Flooding River of Death and a town called Adam
God’s Commission to Joshua (Yeshua)
After the death of Moses the servant of the
Lord, it came to pass that the Lord spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’
assistant, saying: “Moses My servant is dead. Now, therefore, arise, go
over this Jordan, you and all these people, to the land which I am
giving to them—the children of Israel. Every place that the sole of your foot
will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses. Joshua
1:1-3
Maybe you have heard
elements of the story of crossing the Jordan, most however are unaware of what
day it took place or even what season it happened in. Discovering which day
it took place adds another dimension, it reveals another aspect of the purposes
of God being accomplished at the fullness of time, in order to unveil his plan
to redeem the world.
Let's dive into the text
and discover what significant day this took place.
Joshua 4:10 says...
Now the people came up from the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and they camped in Gilgal on the east border of Jericho.
For those of you who have had some exposure to the Spring Feasts of God, you may recognize this tenth day of the first month. It was the day set aside for all of Israel to select their Passover Lamb. We find the instructions in the book of Exodus.
Now the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, “This month shall be your beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year to you. Speak to all the congregation of Israel: ‘On the tenth of this month every man shall take for himself a lamb, according to the house of his father, a lamb for a household.
Exodus 12:1-3
Logically, all of these events
happened on the same day… so if they came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day
of the first month then certainly they went down into the Jordan on the tenth
day of the first month.
Let’s go back to the book of Joshua
chapter 3 to see what took place that tenth day.
7 And the Lord said to Joshua, “This day I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.
13 And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests who bear the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, that the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off, the waters that come down from upstream, and they shall stand as a heap.”
14-16 So it was, when the people set out from their camp to cross over the Jordan, with the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people, and as those who bore the ark came to the Jordan, and the feet of the priests who bore the ark dipped in the edge of the water (for the Jordan overflows all its banks during the whole time of harvest), that the waters which came down from upstream stood still, and rose in a heap very far away at Adam, the city that is beside Zaretan.
God was putting on a theatrical performance, and Joshua and the
priests were stand-ins for the role of Jesus (Yeshua) as the High priest who would
present himself as the sacrifice and also as the ruler who would reverse the
curse and overcome death itself. Jesus the final Adam, would roll back the curse of death that has flowed from generation to generation like a river of death from
Adam.
Therefore, just as through one man (Adam) sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned Romans 5:12
For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ! Romans 5:17
For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous. Romans 5:19
— On the tenth day of the first month Joshua
and the priests carrying the presence of God stepped into the river Jordan, and
the flood of the river (of death) was pushed back upstream and it was heaped up a long way away at Adam.
It was in this same season in the days surrounding the tenth of the first month and in this same Jordan River that John was baptizing people for the remission of sins. John said a very interesting thing about his practice of water baptizing people in the Jordan River. He said, that he baptized with water so that Jesus should be revealed to Israel
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who]is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water. John 1:29-31
It was on this same day the tenth of the first month that
Jesus (Yeshua) presented Himself as the Passover
Lamb of God on the day of selection. The crowds along the road saw him coming down the road after the four-footed lambs had passed. The proof that they selected Jesus was
that they laid their garments on the roadway in front of Him. Others grabbed palm branches and waved
them and then laid them on the road. They cried out, "Hosanna Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord". He followed that (four-footed) lambs up the road from the Mount of Olives to the temple mount. Upon arrival at the temple, the
(four-footed) lambs were led to the Northside and through the lamb gate of the
temple. Whereas Jesus proceeded to the eastern side and entered the temple by the 'Prince' Gate.
He proclaimed two truths about Himself, He was coming this time as the Passover lamb, to take away the sin of the world and He was coming again as King, or as the Prince of Salem, the Prince of Israel.
Spiritual - Application for the tenth day of the first month
Have you selected the ‘lamb’ for your household?
Consider that the lamb you select will be the
only means to cover your sins and the sins of your household. If the lamb you select is accepted
by God, the shed blood will keep your household from disease, poverty, death, and eternal
judgment and separation from their Heavenly Father. What kind of lamb could be
perfect enough to be sufficient?
Will the lamb you have selected be found acceptable by a
righteous and Holy God?
On the Tenth of Abib, this year why not consider letting Yeshua
step into the river of death in your place and become for you the Lamb
of God which takes away the sin of __________ put your own name in this blank.
For believers, this year consider again whether you are
trying to earn your salvation or if you are wholly dependent on the finished work
of Yeshua. The blood of the spotless Lamb brushed with hyssop over the doorposts (entry points) of your life and the lives of your family members.
