RECEIVING THE HOLY SPIRIT - 3 Baptisms in the Scriptures
THREE BAPTISMS OF SCRIPTURE
for "by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body" 1 Corinthians 12:13
The disciple Baptizes (baptizo) us in Water
"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit." Matthew 28:19
Jesus baptizes (baptizo) us in/with the Holy Spirit - Baptism in the Holy Spirit
“I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. Matthew 3:11
The Greek word Baptizo is used to describe all three baptisms This choice of words indicates much more than a simple 'dipping' or immersing in a liquid as the Greek word Bapto would indicate.
The word Bapto is found in four places in the New Testament
Luke 16:24, twice in John 13:26, and in Revelation 20:13. Each time it is used to describe an item simply being dipped into a liquid. Whereas when the word Baptizo is used it indicates a permanent, irreversible change by being immersed.
“The clearest example that shows the meaning of the word 'baptizo' vs. the word 'bapto' is found in a text from the Greek poet and physician Nicander, who lived about 200 B.C. It is a recipe for making pickles and it is helpful because it uses both words.
Nicander says that in order to make a pickle, the vegetable should first be ‘dipped’ or bapto into boiling water and then ‘baptized’ or 'baptizo' in the vinegar solution. Both verbs concern the immersing of vegetables in a solution. But the first is temporary. The second, the act of baptizing the vegetable, produces a permanent change. When used in the New Testament, this word more often refers to our union and identification with Christ than to our water baptism.
For instance, later in Mark’s gospel, Jesus says ‘He that believes and is baptized shall be saved. He is saying that mere intellectual assent is not enough. There must be a union with Him, a real substantive change, like the cucumber to the pickle.” Every true Christian needs to be a pickle. Every Christian needs not only to have been washed in the water but fundamentally changed by the vinegar.
And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved, but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name, they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; Mark 16:15-17
Each of these three baptisms permanently changes who we are, like the cucumber that has become the pickle, we can never go back to the way we were. There is no turning back, just like a pickle can never return to becoming a cucumber, someone who has been baptized by the Spirit into Christ can no longer live as they used to.
Their eyes are opened and they see the world in a whole new light. They do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with their God.

The first and the third baptisms cannot be the same thing! Not theologically nor grammatically. The subjects are different.
In the first baptism, the Holy Spirit is the baptizer and the
immersing is into Jesus (body) Salvation
In the third baptism, Jesus is the baptizer and immerses us
into the Holy Spirit.
Only four events are recorded in all four of the gospels, they comprise the ‘finished work of Jesus the Christ’ and correlate to the four Spring Feasts. They are the:
- the Death of Christ, - (Feast of Passover)
- the Burial of Christ - (Feast of Unleavened Bread)
- the Resurrection of Christ - (Feast of First Fruits)
- the Baptism in/with the Holy Spirit. - (Feast of Shavuot)
John’s declaration of the One
who comes after me.
Matthew 3:11 “I indeed baptize
you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than
I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the
Holy Spirit and fire.
Mark 1:8 - “I indeed baptized
you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
Luke 3:16 - John answered,
saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is
coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loosen. He will baptize you
with the Holy Spirit and fire.
John 1:33 - John answered,
saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is
coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loosen. He will baptize you
with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Acts 1:5 - And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; “for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
- Repent, unto Salvation
- Let every one of you Be baptized, in water
- Receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit
V39 - For the promise is to you and your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.
