THAT TIME OF THE YEAR... THAT TIME IN HISTORY
A voice in the wilderness... "Prepare ye prepare ye the way of the Lord."
RETURN to the Lord
.
The Seven Feasts of Israel were the annual events commanded by God for them to commemorate in remembrance and were to be celebrated by all. All males 20 and older were required to show up o be cut off from God's people.
But they also embodied a prophetic glimpse forward into the future in the NEW Covenant.
Twice during the year, in preparation for the feasts that foretold Jesus in his first and His second comings they set aside a period of reflection and of purging.
- The very first 13 days of the first month of Abib they were required to remove all leaven from their houses. This was a natural ritual that mirrored a spiritual reality. The act of searching for and removing natural leaven from their houses was meant to parallel God's children searching their own hearts and removing any sin and the cares of this world. The reason for practicing this removal of leaven (sin) was so that their eyes could be open to see their long-awaited Messiah at His first coming as the Lamb of God and as the Incorruptible Bread come down out of Heaven. But in spite of their annual rehearsals of removing leaven from their homes, they missed Him when he appeared. Jesus wept over Jerusalem because they missed their day of visitation and they were left desolate.
- In the sixth month of Elul -There is also a second time each year where self-examination and repentance, and turning or returning to the Lord were 'rehearsed' each year in the fall, for the full month of Elul for 30 days just before Trumpets. These 'last days' prophetically speak of the days just before Jesus' second coming as King and this self-examination period for returning and repentance is so that we will have our eyes open to see our long-awaited King in His second coming. But we do not even practice these rehearsals and so we too could miss His Second coming! Jesus said a disturbing phrase at the end of the parable of the unjust judge. He said,
And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them? I tell you that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?” Luke 18:7-8
They set aside 30 days to practice "returning" This returning is best portrayed in history by the man, John the Baptizer who went down to the Jordan river and began his ministry of "a voice of one crying in the wilderness "prepare ye the way of the Lord", during the sixth month of the year. That was a full six months before Jesus appeared and asked to be baptized and then began His ministry. If John started six months before Jesus started and Jesus started just before the Passover feast began, then John would have begun his ministry during the month of Elul. Which is the season of Teshuvah (to Return) which preceded the Feasts of Trumpets each year. Another title for the Feast of Trumpets is the Great and Terrible day of the Lord. No wonder his message of Return/repent impacted the inhabitants of Judea so deeply. John was a fulfillment of the prophet's word of God. I will send the spirit of Elijah before the great and terrible day of the Lord. These were celebrated every year to teach each new generation about the two comings of the Christ.
I wrote more about Teshuvah last year here is the link to that discussion.
John's ministry prophecied 400 years ealrier.
Malachi 4:4-6 New King James Version (NKJV)4“Remember the Law of Moses, My servant,Which I commanded him in Horeb for all Israel,With the statutes and judgments. Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophetBefore the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. And he will turn The hearts of the fathers to the children,And the hearts of the children to their fathers, Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.”
John's ministry foretold by the angel using similar words...
But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John... ...And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
This year this special time for all to 'return' started on August 9th and will continue through to the Day of Atonement on September 19th.
