THE TIMELESSNESS OF PRAYER

This morning I want to talk about the timelessness of Prayer.
Can we cross over a threshold in prayer and reach into a Heavenly reality?
Can we cross over to a place where time ceases to exist?
There is a threshold in our minds, that divides time from eternity.
Can we cross in prayer to a place that transcends time?
Can we cross over from world consciousness into Heavenly Consciousness?

Did you know that as a culture, we are very interested in transcending time to touch timelessness?
In the last several years at least 556 movies have been made with time travel as the central plot. Hollywood has experimented with every aspect of traveling to a different time. Including how one can change history by going back in time and changing what was done in the past.

Well prayer also changes things, prayer for forgiveness and for deliverance remove the power of things done in the past and can change the future.

In the movie “Somewhere in Time” Christopher Reeves plays a man who finds a mystical connection with a woman whose picture graces the lobby of the Grand Hotel, .

  • He goes out and purchases a vintage suit at a second hand store
  • We need to clothe ourselves in a mindset that is of heavenly culture.
  • He checks into his room and shuts the door,
  • We need to check into our (prayer) room and close the door
  • He then dresses in his period suit from a time many years earlier.
  • We need to clothe ourselves in priestly robes
  • He carefully removes from himself every vestige of the present world.
  • We need to remove every vestige of this present world system
  • He quiets himself closes his eyes and begins to meditate.
  • We need to quiet ourselves, close our eyes and meditate on the Lord whom,we love
  • Everything in him is focused towards traveling to that other time.
  • Everything in us should be focused on living in that time with the King.

We should be just as devoted to make journey to the inward life and just as captivated in meeting with Jesus. Our movie friend is successful in reaching that other time. He finds the object of his adoration. But after overcoming many hurdles, just when they are getting ready to spend time together, he reaches into the vest pocket of his second hand suit to tip the bell hop and pulls out a penny from the current year.

He is pulled back into the present screaming and never gets back again to where he was in that other place. He never gets to reconnect with the object of his love. He dies in that hotel room trying desperately to get back to that other place again. But it never happens.

This movie helps us understand the fragile nature of connecting with our (supernatural) Lord during our devotional time. Almost any little thing from the present age, from the here and now, can pull us out of our time with Him and try as we might to get back there, it is never easy. Have you ever had a dream and forget it and think I know I can get it back if I just go back to sleep. Let me know how it turns out.

When you are ready to engage in prayer "Check your bags at the curb." For this very reason, I have a practice of emptying my pockets whenever I enter worship or prayer. I don't want my hand to find something that distracts my mind should it find it in my pocket. To me it is an act of removing distractions before I begin to seek the LORD.
